Here are some answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about Petite Cuisine. If you have a question that's not answered here feel free to Contact us.

How do I decide which meals are best suited for my baby’s needs?

Our menu is based on the latest UK and EU guidelines for babies and toddlers, and in close partnership with our consultant paediatric dietician, who has approved each meal’s nutritional content according to age group.

As your baby grows and becomes a toddler, nutritional needs change and so do portion sizes and ingredients used in each meal in order to assist in the mental and physical development of your little one.

Our meal selections are categorised according to your child’s age group so that it’s easier for you to browse and select the meals best suited for your little one!

What if my baby or toddler does not like the meal?

Usually it takes 10 tries for a baby or toddler to get used to eating new ingredients. Experts believe in offering as much choice as possible, even reintroducing foods that your child did not previously like. Your little ones’ taste buds keep evolving all the time. Some days they are hungrier than others which also impacts their preferences. Ultimately, a toddler should have a healthy and varied diet, which is why we aim to foster familiarity with different flavours and combinations of foods. Research shows that by exposing our children to more range, we increase the chances of them accepting a varied diet once they are adults.

How much do I feed my baby?

The general rule of thumb is to feed your baby or toddler based on their appetites. Our portion sizes have been designed according to the latest guidelines for babies and toddlers (see here for more on infant and toddler portion sizes). For younger babies, solid food should not replace either breastmilk or formula, as it remains a key source of nutrition.

Always consult your doctor about your baby or toddler’s needs.

How do I know my baby is ready to start solids?

This is one for your pediatrician! Each baby is different and there are often signs to look out for. In general, parents start weaning their children between the ages of 5 to 7 months. You can find comprehensive information on weaning on the NHS website.

My baby gags with solid food. What do I do?

Gagging is a natural and also useful reflex for babies. It does not necessarily indicate your child is not ready to move on to more adventurous flavours or textures. Be persistent and patient, and keep trying. It often takes up to 10 times or more for children to accept new combinations of ingredients. If your child gags with a meal that has more texture than he or she is used to, try again in a few days or weeks, or make sure it contains a flavour he or she likes best. At Petite Cuisine, we are more than happy to guide you through this process and work with you to prepare bespoke meals, if required, with your baby’s favourite flavours!

How are nutritional values calculated?

Nutritional values for commercial recipes are generally calculated using a computer analysis programme. Each ingredient is added to the programme and the nutrients (e.g protein, carbohydrate, fat, fibre etc.) analysed to give the amount of each of these per 100g. Using these values the amount of each nutrient per portion can be calculated. The programme takes into account changes in the weight of each food when cooked; for instance some foods such as boiled potatoes, pasta or squash weigh more when cooked as they absorb water and some weigh less as the water evaporates when cooked such as roasted vegetables. Food for babies needs to follow guidelines in terms of the nutrients in each portion, they are not necessarily always the same as for adults; small children need a higher fat and lower fibre intake than adults.

What if my child has allergies?

Some of our meals contain allergens such as dairy, gluten and fish, however majority of our meals remain free of all allergens. Please get in touch with us, should you require a personalised meal that excludes any allergen and we will do our best to prepare it for you. In case of severe allergies, please do not order from us, as our meals are prepared in a kitchen that handles allergens.

When do meals expire? How long do they stay fresh?

With each delivery we give out leaflets that contain detailed information, indicating storing and re-heating instructions. Most of our meals stay delicious and fresh in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours from delivery date and 1 month in the freezer. Each meal has a label for reference. For dry snacks, please also refer to the individual labels.

Is your packaging BPA-free? Is it heating and dishwasher safe?

We have chosen the highest quality glass jars with plastic lids. They are considered healthy and environmentally friendly. They also preserve the taste and nutritional content of the food. Our jars are FDA approved, BPA free, lead-free, colourless, odour free and non-toxic. They are extremely functional as they are resistant to high temperature- oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and freezer safe.

Our jars are 100% recyclable. Help us preserve the planet and create a better future for our little ones by returning the jars to us with your next order. You will get a 5p refund for each jar.
